MINE
| BEFORE |
| A top performing mine, with 2006 profits exceeding $1 billion, was scheduled for closure. Sustained increases in commodity prices, however, led mine management to commit to extending the mine’s life. Among other challenges, this required pit and crew expansion, significantly more waste removal, extended and expanded maintenance on a larger truck fleet, hiring and training new truck drivers, and transfer of experience from senior to junior staff. |

| AFTER |
| Working toward a clear, newly developed goal, the mine team began to consistently exceed target tonnage production goals -- at a lower cost per tonne than the target number -- within three months. In six months, the improvement in production was 28%. |
